I was always given to understand that the name Frid was also shared by one of the minor Norse gods (of fishing and storms or some such) also that Friday was named after us well that's what I like to believe anyway. Given this I am going to take tomorrow off as a holiday. Apropos of nothing I had an Uncle Bob once that emigrated to Canada (in the fifties I think) seems like a sensible thing to do.

Hi! The Frid Family in Hamilton, Ontario are prominent here in business. Three brothers emigrated from the county of Kent, England to Canada before the turn of the century (last century). One of the Frid's descendants even became a known actor in the States - jonathan frid.

Hello! I am from Minnesota, USA, as is the rest of my branch of the "Frid Family". My family originates, at least as far back as we've been able to trace, to Bohemia (what is presently the Czech Republic, or near).

Hi, my name is Michael.
My family is a Jewish family who has been living today in Israel, but originly came from St. Petersburg (Russia).
Almost all of our family was killed in the holocaust by the Nazis, and alot of documents and information were destroyed. That's why we don't truly know our ancestor's real origin.
But as it's known to me, the Frid surname is originaly Yiddish (A Jewish language which was spoken in Europe for more then 1000 years).
The Frid name was evolved from the word "Friede" which means in German and Yiddish - "Peace".
Nowdays, there're about 200,000 Frid families happily live in Israel.
Certainly, I would like to know if you have any connection to Judaism and to us.

Hello, Im`jesper Frid. Im`the ancestor of a long line of Frid´s in Denmark.
We are avere of the fact, that the Frid name is originaly Swedish.
My grandfathers sister emigrated to Canada, and kept the name Frid, so that could probably explain some of the Canadian connexions ?
Best regards to all Frid´s

Hello. My grandfather imagrated from England to Canada and then to the USA. We have many Frid relatives in Canada. There are also many Frids in Michigan, which is where I grew up. It is fun trying to trace relatives. The history about how soldiers were named is also very interesting.
Thank you for sharing.

Hello Marcia in Canada,
Your grandfather is no relative of ours, although he came from the same city as our first Frid ancestor. Only one of our Frids went to Canada; he was called Albert.
Do you know when your grandfather was born and when he left Sweden?
The name Frid is a typical soldier's name that could be given to any new soldier. Most soldiers got short names, just like hunting dogs.
Sometimes the name is descriptive like Stark (strong) or Lustig (funny). Maybe Frid was very calm or just the opposite. Rumour has it that one man got the name Fyllehund (drunkard), but at a later time his name was changed to Förbättrader (improved). When one soldier died or retired the next soldier could get the same name, even though they were not related.

Hello,
I live in Canada. My grandfather Ole Frid came from Malmo,
Sweden. Was the name Frid given to anyone who served in the army?
I look forward to hearing from you.

I'm just checking if this works...

If it does, then: welcome to frid.orgs Guestbook, version 2006... Feel free to leave a comment, or perform some 'frid family' research.

I'll get started on the other pages on this site right now...
